Ubicada en una remota ciudad montañosa de Nueva Zelanda, "Top of the Lake" se centra en la desaparición de Tui, de 12 años, que está embarazada de cinco meses. La última vez que la vieron fue detenida en un cofre de un lago congelado, y ahora toda la atención está centrada en el detective sin experiencia Robin Griffin, quien lidera la investigación en la misma ciudad donde sufrió eventos traumáticos años antes. No solo debe encontrar a Tui, sino que Robin también se embarca en un viaje de autodescubrimiento. Sus límites se ponen a prueba en medio de choques con Matt, el padre de la niña desaparecida y el narcotraficante local, y GJ, un gurú en un campamento de mujeres local.
